PRC Denies Postal Service Exigent Rate Request
Decision is Unanimous

The Postal Regulatory Commission denied the Postal Service request for an average 5.6 percent rate increase. The Commission found that the Postal Service failed to justify rate increases in excess of its statutory Consumer Price Index cap.

This does not mean that postage rates will not go up in 2011, but it does reduce the amount the post office can increase the rates. Once we have the response by the post office about their rate plan for 2011 we will let you know.

Now, the post office has appealed this ruling, so we will have to wait to see if it is upheld. We will keep you posted.

Secrets to Getting More Response From Your Mail

Do you know three basic elements that determine the success of a direct mail campaign?

Direct Mail Brings in 78% of Donations for Non-Profits

According to a recent study from Target Analytics, direct mail was the top revenue channel in 2009 for non-profit organizations.  Analysis determined that direct mail delivered $8 of every $10 donated.

The Target Analytics Index of National Fundraising Performance analyzes direct marketing giving for many of the largest non-profit organizations in the country. For the twelve months ending Q4 2009, Target Analytics evaluated transactions from 79 organizations, including over 38 million donors and more than 74 million gifts totaling over $2 billion in revenue.

Additional findings:
•The proportion of revenue coming in online has been growing steadily.  In 2005, Internet gifts made up only 4% of all revenue. In 2009, the Internet accounted for 9% of total revenue.
•Internet gifts tend to be significantly larger than mail.  For indexed organizations in 2009, the median online gift was $79, the median telemarketing gift was $45, and the median mail gift was $40.
•In 2009, 87% of all new donors for the non-profits studied were acquired via direct mail.   While the proportion of donors acquired online is growing steadily, only 12% of new donors were acquired online in 2009.

Small Business Owners: Print Ads Most Effective

FedEx Office’s third annual Signs of the Times national survey of small businesses finds that:

87% of small business owners say that printed marketing and advertising tools are somewhat to very effective at driving customers to their businesses.

61% believe traditional marketing and advertising methods are more effective than web-based counterparts at bringing in customers.

Interestingly, young adult owners (ages 18-34) are greater proponents of signs, banners, posters, flyers, and brochures as cost effective marketing/advertising tools, than their older counterparts. One out of two young adult respondents value signs and banners, compared to 36% of owners age 55+, and 57% of 18-34 year-old SB owners tout the power of flyers and brochures, compared to 47% of their older counterparts.

46% of small business owners have plans to grow their business in 2010 by improving their company’s online presence; 36% plan to utilize social media/networking sites to build business.

About: FedEx Office, in conjunction with the Ketchum Global Research Network, worked with Braun Research to conduct the survey. They polled small business owners who employ 5 to 100 employees and own firms that generate over $100,000 in annual revenue. A total of 500 interviews were completed; the margin of error is +/-4.38% at the 95% confidence level.
