5 Tips 09172012

Ok, so you have started using social media for your business. How is it going? Sometimes the best intentions are not well received. Here are some common mistakes in social media marketing:

  1. Not knowing who your followers are: Why is knowing this important? If you know who your followers are you can create content that engages them. The whole point of social media is engagement. Spending the time to have two way conversations with people. This is not your usual one way push marketing.
  2. Not using social media how it is intended: You must not use social media to post marketing messages. You need to use social media to interact with your followers. Provide them with good useful information that will continue to show them the value of engaging with you. You need to make sure that you are following others as well. Get to know them by asking questions and make sure to read the comments.
  3. Thinking you should have followers overnight: You will not gather a large following overnight. It takes time to build them up. You must be willing to power thru the process even if in the beginning there are only 5. They will grow with your constant effort to provide useful and interesting content.
  4. Not planning: One thing that gets forgotten very often is putting together a social media marketing plan. Like all other forma of your marketing, you need to have a plan on what you want to accomplish and how you are going to go about doing it. If you started without a plan, now is the time to create it. You can create your own focus groups and gather opinions of people with very little effort.
  5. Not using the tools to analyze what you are doing: You need to know who your followers are, what they are doing and how you get the most response from them. There are many tools out there to help you with this. Make sure you are using them. You can track demographics, topics, trends and so on.
